ROOTED IN SACRED KNOWLEDGE

From the Comoros
to Hadramawt

Habib Umar bin Ahmad bin Sumayt was born in the Comoros Islands in 1303 AH / 1886 into a family deeply connected to scholarship, devotion and the Ba 'Alawi tradition.

His early years connected several important centres of learning. He joined his father, Habib Ahmad, in Zanzibar while still a child and was later sent to Shibam in Hadramawt, the ancestral home of his family.

In Shibam, Habib Tahir bin Abdullah bin Sumayt supervised his education. There he studied with some of the leading scholars of his age, receiving a formation rooted in sacred knowledge, worship and refinement of character.

✦ His upbringing joined the scholarly heritage of Hadramawt with the Muslim communities of East Africa.
THE SCHOLARS OF HIS AGE

Formed in the
Hadrami Tradition

During his years in Hadramawt, Habib Umar benefited from a distinguished generation of scholars. Among them were Habib Aydarus bin Umar al-Habashi, Habib Ahmad bin Hasan al-Attas and Habib Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Mashhur.

His teachers also included Habib Ali bin Muhammad al-Habashi, Habib Alawi bin Abdullah bin Shihab, Habib Abdullah bin Umar al-Shatiri and Habib Salim bin Hafiz.

He later returned to Zanzibar, where he remained close to his father and continued his studies until he himself became recognised as a teacher and caller to Allah.

SERVICE ACROSS THE ISLANDS

Knowledge Put
Into Action

Recognising the need for religious teaching in the Comoros, Habib Umar returned to the islands of his birth. He travelled between towns and villages, teaching and strengthening religious life within their communities.

His service extended beyond lessons and gatherings. He contributed to the establishment of mosques and schools and supported projects that provided communities with collected rainwater.

His journeys also took him to Madagascar and elsewhere in East Africa, carrying with him the scholarly and spiritual tradition in which he had been raised.

His da'wah brought together knowledge, worship and practical service to the communities around him.
ZANZIBAR

Scholarship,
Justice & Reconciliation

In 1355 AH / 1936, Habib Umar was appointed judge of Pemba. Two years later he became one of the judges of Zanzibar, following a path of public service that his father had also undertaken.

In 1362 AH / 1942, he was appointed Chief Judge. He remained in judicial service for around two decades and became known for seeking reconciliation between people wherever possible.

He also reorganised the administration of religious endowments so that their resources could better support mosques and their communities.

Scholarship and responsibility were brought together in service of the community.

THE LANGUAGE OF CHARACTER

A Presence
That Taught

Habib Umar was remembered for speaking little. His influence did not depend upon lengthy speeches. Those who sat with him encountered a man marked by composure, humility and attentiveness to Allah.

He personally served his guests and lived without attachment to possessions. Even when political upheaval in Zanzibar resulted in the loss of his home and belongings, he did not allow resentment to define his response.

Forgiveness, reliance upon Allah and concern for others remained visible qualities throughout his life.

HIS WAY Knowledge was carried not only through words, but through character, presence and service.
A LIVING LEGACY

Teachers Who
Carried the Trust

A generation of scholars and callers benefited from Habib Umar's companionship and instruction. Through them, his influence reached communities far beyond the islands in which he lived.

Among those who benefited from him were Habib Umar bin Abdullah bin Shaykh Abu Bakr bin Salim, Habib Ahmad Mashhur al-Haddad and Habib Abd al-Qadir bin Ahmad al-Saqqaf.

Although he had no male offspring, his students became a spiritual family through whom his knowledge, character and approach to da'wah continued to be carried.
